WINE BOTTLE SHAPES

Traditional Bottle Shapes
In many cases, the shape or color of a wine bottle will tell you its origin.
Traditional Glass Shapes
The three most common shapes of wine glasses are shown below, but others are frequently used for more specialized wines such as sherry, alsace, and rhine varieties. Avoid using the broad, shallow form of Champagne glass (supposedly molded from Marie Antoinette's breast). These glasses allow for the too-rapid release of carbon dioxide (the bubbles), resulting in a flat wine.
Some other notes on glasses....
- Glasses should be clear and uncut, so the drinker may adequately evaluate the color.
- Fill glasses only abou 1/3 full. This allows for swirling without spilling, and holds the bouquet in a confined space for a better nose.
- When pouring wine into the glass, tilt the glass and let the wine flow down the side. This prevents splashing wine out of the glass.
